On 1st April 1933 the towns of Burnley, Colne and Nelson amalgamated their tram and bus services. The tram services were replaced wholly by buses by 1935 and the last of these buses, Leyland TD4s, were replaced in 1959 by two Leyland PD3/6 buses Nos. 232/3. These massive 73 seat buses, nicknamed Big Berthas by staff, were the first front entrance double deckers. They were used initially on the X38 Limited Stop between Burnley and Colne. A further four examples 234-7 were purchased in 1961. When withdrawn in 1974 the six buses were purchased by Lancaster City Council for many years of further use. | |

Blazefield took over the East Lancashire operation of Stagecoach in 2001, immediately reintoducing the local identity of Burnley and Pendle. The X43 is a long established route linking Manchester with Burnley, Colne and Neson. Blazefield introduced a fleet of high quality twin deck vehicles in 2005, which feature leather seats throughout. At the same time the route was given a new identity under the Witch Way brand. Each vehicle is named after the so called Pendle Witches who were convicted of witchcraft in the 17th century. | |
