The CH-53GS used by the German army flying forces is a CH-53G adapted to present-day requirements. Essential features are the two auxiliary tanks that extend its range, the new titanium rotor blades, the electronic countermeasures pod, the decoy chaff/flare dispensers and an improved cockpit. Of the 112 CH-53Gs bought at the beginning of 1970, 20 helicopters are currently being equipped to this standard at ECD, Donauwörth. Its capability has again been upgraded to make it the largest helicopter in the western world. In the meantime army flying units have also carried out a wide range of missions for NATO and the UN. Their versatility has proved itself in the Oder floods, on fire- fighting missions in Greece and transporting aid to the Kurds for which they received world-wide recognition. They have also become a familiar sight in Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. This roomy helicopter has made itself indispensable for transporting troops and materials and also for rescue services. The MH-60L is one of the many variants of the Blackhawk family that resulted from experience in the Vietnam War and today forms the backbone of the US Army helicopter fleet. In addition to special versions for transport, combat with MGs, rockets and other weapons, together with medical service missions, versions were also produced for use with the elite American units. The MH-60L version was designed in 1990 in close collaboration with the pilots and mechanics of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) and was tailored to the special requirements of the unit. The mission of the Ranger unit known as Task Force 160 is the infiltration and exfiltration of enemy territory and the provision of support for special operations forces, operating behind enemy lines. For these missions the MH-60L is equipped with the latest electronics for day and night missions. On active service the MH-60L can carry auxiliary tanks containing 870 litres each. The MH-60Ls were used by the 160th SOAR among others in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and also in Operation Provide Comfort in Turkey and Northern Iraq in 1990-91 as well as Operation Restore Hope in Somalia in 1993.
