The Mark 1 was the first tracked armoured fighting vehicle to go into production and was a direct development of the experimental tank 'Mother' which was built and tested in the winter of 1915-1916. The type first saw action at the battle of Flers-Courcelette on 15th September 1916, but the action was not as great a success as had been hoped due to the difficult terrain and the crews' inexperience. the armament was fitted in side sponsons to maintain a low centre of gravity, the Male tank mounting two 6-pdr. naval guns and four Hotchkiss machine guns while the Female having four Vickers and one Hotchkiss gun. Production totalled 150. This model is based on the example on display in the Tank Museum at Bovington in Dorset.
more | Airfix 1/72 T34 Tank (01316) The most widely used Russian tank in the Second World War and one of the outstanding tanks of all times was the T34. It was first prooduced in 1940 but its existence remained a close secret until the German invasion in June 1941. The T34 was superior in every way to other tanks in service at that time. It was faster, better armoured and carried a larger gun. Perhaps most important of all, it was reliable and extremely simple enabling it to be produced in large numbers. When first introduced, the T34 was fitted with a small turret carrying a 76.2 mm gun and this T34/76 version is one of the two that can be built from this kit. more..
more | Airfix 1/72 British Matilda Tank (01318) The Mark II infantry tank, better known as the Matilda, was used in action by the British Army between 1939 and 1942 in France and North Africa, and by the Australians in New Guinea. Large numbers were also shipped to Russia and proved generally popular due mainly to its good armour protection, which in places amounted to 100 mm thick. Main armament consisted of one 2 pdr gun with 93 rounds and one 7.92 mm Besa machine gun co-axially mounted. By late 1941, the Matilda's gun power was generally felt to be inferior to that of German tanks and, in 1942, with the advent of the more powerful American Grants and Shermans, the Matilda was gradually withdrawn from action in North Africa.
