Born in Dorfen, Bavaria, Germany, he participated in 112 grands prix, debuting on July 14, 1973. He won one GP race (1975 Spanish Grand Prix), secured no pole positions, achieved 8 podiums, and scored a total of 71 championship points.Mass, is perhaps most infamously known for his blameless part in the death of Gilles Villeneuve, a big star of the day. During Friday practice, for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder, Villeneuve collided with Mass whilst attempting to overtake him. Just as the pair rounded a flat out left kink, (Mass ahead, Villeneuve trailling) Jochen moved to the right hand side of the track to let Villeneuve through. Unfortunately, Villeneve had already committed himself to the right hand side, and the two cars touched wheels, in turn launching the hapless Canadian skyward. In the violent 'barrel rolls' which ensued, Villeneuve was flung from his car, landing heavily amongst catch fencing at the side of the track. Villeneuve was pronounced dead some time later.After leaving the Formula One circuit, Mass enjoyed great success in sports car racing, gaining international prominence with his performance during the European Touring Car Championship. In 1972, he teamed up with Hans-Joachim Stuck to drive a Ford Capri RS2600 to victory at the Spa 24 Hours. He went on to win that year's World Sportscar Championship, in 1985 he won the Circuito del Mugello 1000 km race in Italy driving a Porsche 962C and in 1987 partnered with Bobby Rahal to claim victory at the 1987 12 Hours of Sebring race. In 1989, he won the most prestigious endurance race of all, the 24 hours of Le Mans, with the Sauber-entered Mercedes-Benz..Jochen Mass now drives the Mercedes-Benz museum's historic cars. Ralf Schumacher made his Formula One debut in 1997 with the Jordan team .In 1999 he changed to the Williams team and scored three podium finishes and sixth in the World Drivers Championship with the underpowered obsolescent Supertec engine. Schumacher's performance in the 2000 season was considered by many to be a disappointment. Running the powerful new BMW engine, he was expected to compete for wins, but despite only four mechanical failures and being the senior driver in the team, he was only able to match the three podium finishes of the previous year. In 2001, however, he broke through with his first three Grand Prix wins at Imola, Montreal and Hockenheim. In 2002, he won the Malaysian Grand Prix but finished the championship behind team mate Juan-Pablo Montoya, and in 2003, he won the European Grand Prix (at the Nürburgring) and the French Grand Prix, helping, along with teammate Juan Pablo Montoya the Williams team finish second in the Constructors Championship in 2002 and 2003.On June 20, 2004, Schumacher was seriously injured in an accident at the United States Grand Prix. The acceleration was measured at 78 g (765 m/s²), one of the most severe in all of motor racing history, resulting in a concussion as well as two minor fractures to his spinal column. Bernoldi was another Brazilian from a comfortable background who was inspired by the exploits of Ayrton Senna. he started kart racing in 1987 at the age of nine and won a variety of regional and national kart titles before heading for Europe at the age of 17 to try his hand at car racing. He chose to enter Formula Alfa Boxer in Italy and finished fourth in the seriesat his first attempt. At the end of the year he tried Formula Renault and was immediately successful, winning the final round of the European series in an RC Motorsport Tatuus chassis. In 1999 Bernoldi moved to Formula 3000 with the Red Bull Junior Team and began to do testing work for the Sauber team. But he failed to achieve much in 1999 and in 2000 and when Sauber signed up Kimi Raikkonen for the 2001 season his hopes of a Sauber drive were dashed. With backing from Red Bull he was able to buy a drive with Arrows in 2001 and did a respectable job, occasionally being able to match Jos Verstappen. His efforts against Heinz-Harald Frentzen in 2002 were less impressive and there was little demand for his services after Arrows closed its doors in 2002 and he ended up racing in the Nissan World Series. Raikkonen started karting at the age of 12 and enjoyed considerable success in the sport before turning to single-seater racing in 1999 for four races in British Formula Renault. He had a few outings in Formula Ford and then decided to concentrate on Formula Renault and entered the Winter Series in Britain with Manor Motorsport. He won all four events. Her stayed with Manor for the 2000 season and won seven of the 10 races and was on the podium in the other three events. he also took part in three European races, winning two of them.Such was his success that in September 2000 the Sauber team tested him at Mugello and immediately decided to sign him up for 2001 as team mate to Nick Heidfeld. It proved to be an inspired choice and Raikkonen finished sixth on his Grand Prix debut in Australia and went on to score on three more occasions (twice finishing fourth) in the midseason. McLaren decided in August to make a bid for the Finnish driver to replace Mika Hakkinen and he was signed by McLaen on a five year deal in September. In 2002 he failed to win a race but looked strong on several occasions and he won his first F1 victory in Malaysia in 2003. There would be more than 18 months of frustration with poor cars before he won again in Belgium in 2004.In 2005 he was joined at McLaren by Juan Pablo Montoya. The team was very competitive and Raikkonen won a string of races and would have won the World Championship but for poor reliability.There was further frustration in 2006 as the McLaren was not fast enough and Raikkonen decided to take up the offer to join Ferrari in 2007, as replacement for Michael Schumacher.more.. | |

Whether you liked him or not, and for whatever reason, it would be difficult to argue against the fact that Juan Pablo Montoya added colour to F1 during his stay. Mark Webber's path into Formula was far from easy having passed through all the lower categories before evetually getting his chance with Minardi in 2002. His debut turned out to be a major success.
