He later also won the 1998 Race of Champions. After several years of varying success, Colin switched to the M-Sport Ford team in 1999, behind the wheel of the new Ford Focus WRC rally car. This move was rewarded with two quickfire wins at the Safari Rally and Rally Portugal. However he was to struggle with reliability woes for much of the rest of that season, although later he did narrowly miss out on a second driver's title with the M-Sport operation in 2001.With victory on the Safari Rally in 2002, McRae made the record books as a driver with most event wins in the World Rally Championship. Spaniard Carlos Sainz and Frenchman Sébastien Loeb have since overtaken him.In 2003, McRae decided to part ways with Ford and sign with the promising Citroën team. It became a celebrated rally car in Europe and the UK during early to mid-sixties. In America, the TR4 also saw a number of racing successes, even winning an SCCA class championship as late as 1991. In Australia the TR4 was a common site at hill-climb events and various club rallies and circuit racing events. Some cars were fitted with vane-type superchargers, as the three main bearing engine was liable to crankshaft failure if revved beyong 6,500rpm. Superchargers allowed a TR4 to produce much more horse-power and torque at relatively modest revolutions. The standard engine produced 105bhp SAE but supercharged and otherwise performance-tuned a 2.2 litre version could produce in excess of 200 bhp at the flywheelmore..

This car obliged with well-designed seats, ample space, sporty driving characteristics and a classy chassis. The successful Kadett B formed the basis for numerous model variants. One such was the robust and very reliable Rally Coupé that came out in November 1966 and was based on the B Coupé. With their powerful but reasonably priced Rally Coupé, the people in Rüsselsheim were responding to the obvious rally sports boom in the mid sixties. They succeeded, on the one hand, in offering a genuine sports car with distinctly sporty features, that was eminently suitable for the road, but which, on the other hand, was an ideal platform for motor sports, as it would prove in many rallies.

Spectacular comeback for Peugeot, trying to repeat history in (successfully!) copying the success story of the 205 T16. The 206 WRC competed in its first full season in 2000 and won both titles first try. In the makes championship this car kept being unbeaten for 3 years in succession. In 2002 the 206 dominated the championship that much that the opposition manufacturers felt demolished and that die hard fans of the opposing teams felt it hard to believe everything was on a fair level, which it however was. By the end of its career as a works car, within only 4 years and a little bit, the 206 won 24 WRC events. This is the best indication how competitive this Peugeot was. With WRC event victories the 206 won more events than such illustrious cars as the Audi Quattro, the Ford Escort Mk2, The Lancia Stratos, in fact the Peugeot 206 turned the most successful rally car model of all time with the sole exception of the group A Lancia Delta.

In 1988, Lancia gained 10 victories out of 11 rallies and the world title, won well before the end of the season. The 8 valve Delta had won, ahead of every rival in every continent, demonstrating its unrivalled performance, reliability and durability. But Lancia did not let this lull them into complacency, the 16 valve HF Integrale was being developed and was to run alongside its stablemate during the 1989 season. The new car was identifiable from its predecessor by the raised centre of the bonnet to accommodate the new 16 valve engine. The other exterior changes visible were; wider wheels and tyres and new identity badges front and rear. The torque split was changed to 47% front and 53% rear, this gave the car better handling characteristics, on tarmac, where the Ford Cosworths were beginning to show their potential. Both the 8 and 16 valve cars were in use by the Works Team during the 1989 season, the 16 valve made its successful debut on the Sanremo Rally with Miki Biasion. more..

He was on target to notch up victory on that year's Acropolis Rally Greece, his career first, until suffering two punctures and instead being forced to concede to the more experienced McRae. Nonetheless, Märtin still impressed during his time as pilot of the Ford Focus WRC. He won the equivalent event in Greece the following year as well as being only the third driver in the history of the WRC to break the Scandinavian stranglehold on the Neste Rally Finland. In addition to this, Märtin was inaugural winner, again with Ford, of the Corona Rally Mexico in 2004. He also won the Tarmac rallies of Corsica and Catalunya in the same year. These victories happened to be the last for the Märtin/Park partnership.
more | Sunstar/Chrono 1/18 Ford Focus RS WRC M Martin M Park Monte Carlo Rally 2004 (3904) The Monte Carlo Rally (officially Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo) is a rallying event organized each year by the Automobile Club de Monaco. The rally takes place along the French Riviera in the Principality of Monaco and southeast France. From its inception in 1911 by Prince Albert I, this rally, under difficult and demanding conditions, was an important means of testing the latest improvements and innovations to automobiles. Winning the rally gave the car a great deal of credibility and publicity. Since 1973, the race has been held in January as the first race of the FIA World Rally Championship. The conditions typically comprise of dry tarmac, wet tarmac, snow, and ice, sometimes all in a single stage of the rally. This places a big emphasis on tyre choices, as a driver has to balance the need for grip on ice and snow with the need for grip on dry tarmac. For the driver, this is often a difficult choice as the tyres that work well on snow and ice normally perform badly on dry tarmac. In 2004 Markko Martin and co-driver Michael Park finished in second place

Mouton effectively quit rallying after the Group B category was banned in late 1986, both unwilling to take part in a new, slower championship under Group A rules and eager to start a family. more | Sunstar/Chrono 1/18 Audi Quattro Rally Monte Carlo 1982 Mikkola (4187) Hannu Olavi Mikkola (born 24 May 1942 in Joensuu, Finland) is a retired world champion rally driver.Mikkola's rally career spanned 31 years, starting in 1963, but his most successful period was during the 1970s and 1980s. The 1970s saw Mikkola a frontrunner in many international events, usually in a Ford Escort, and 1979 he made a serious challenge at the World Rally Championship title, ultimately finishing runner-up. He was a seven time winner of the 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland and won the RAC Rally in Great Britain four times.Mikkola was joined by Swedish co-driver Arne Hertz in 1977 and the pair were very quickly a force to be reckoned with. The Mikkola/Hertz partnership lasted for thirteen years, through to the end of the 1990 season. He was partnered by Johnny Johansson for the 1991 season.Mikkola was runner-up again in 1980 with Ford, but switched to the new Audi team for 1981, to drive the revolutionary four wheel drive Audi Quattro. The partnership was successful from the outset: Mikkola led the 1981 Monte Carlo Rally, the Audi's first event, until an accident put him out of the event. He won the next WRC event, the Swedish Rally, convincingly but the Quattro had problems with reliability and despite another win on the RAC Rally, Mikkola only managed third in the driver's championship. He won the 1000 Lakes and RAC rallies the following year, but did not improve on third position in the championship, ultimately finishing behind Opel's Walter Röhrl and team-mate Michèle Mouton. 1983 was to be Mikkola's year. Four wins and three second places saw him and co-driver Arne Hertz finally take the World Championship title. A second place in the championship followed in 1984, behind his team-mate Stig Blomqvist, but 1985 saw him slip to 22nd in the final standings after the Audi team was overwhelmed by new Group B competition from Peugeot and Lancia.Mikkola remained with Audi until 1987, winning the Safari Rally in a Group A Audi 200 that year, before switching to Mazda

Loeb was born in Haguenau. He grew up in Oberhoffen-sur-Moder wanting to become a gymnast/acrobat, but instead turned his interests to racing as an adult. In 1998, he started entering events in the French Citroën Saxo Trophy series, winning the title in 1999. Guy Fréquelin, Citroën Sport's Team Principal, would serve as Loeb's mentor as he entered the Junior World Rally Championship, which he conquered in 2001. During this time, he was also released for participation in various World Rally Championship events in the Citroën Xsara, where in Sanremo he surprisingly hounded Peugeot tarmac wizard and eventual victor Gilles Panizzi to the finish.2002 would be Loeb's first full-season with Citroën. He won the Rally Germany, the first event of his flourishing career, although on road he also won the season-opening Rally Monte Carlo. His victory was taken away by a controversial time penalty after the last stage, which gave victory to second placed Tommi Mäkinen. In 2003, Loeb won three WRC events before losing to Petter Solberg in Wales Rally Great Britain and also losing the championship to Solberg by just one point.
